The Badge Work To Be Done
Starting at our house
TASK #1: June 6th, 2011: Jaibrian began her "Caring For My Environment" Badge today. She has starting to learn the definition of "Environment" and has begun her poster.
The first Task to earn this badge asks her to take a walk around our block (environment) to pick up garbage, while noting the positive and negative impacts that humans can have on their environment.
The sinking water pipe area
Right near our home is a sinking sidewalk that occured because of the drainpipe that humans laid under the ground. The pipe has collapsed causing damage and ugliness. That's a negative.
You will note smiles and thumbs up when positives were seen; but there were many more negatives than positives, I'm afraid.
Jai picking up trash
I have to say that I cannot believe how much trash we accumulated in the one block that our house sits on.
Trash people make and throw away
Abandoned house on our block
By the end of our journey, everyone had a turn carrying the garbage bag and picking up crud from the sidewalk and street. I held it at the end of the route because it had, sadly, gotten heavy. The bag was over half full and gross.
Cell Phone Jai found that had been run over on our street
All the trash they found on the block
Jaibrian asked me to "Tell everyone on my blog to walk around their block and pick up garbage to make your environment pretty. Garbage is gross." So, there is your environmental challenge. Once a month, pick up your block.
Tada...Hummingbird feeder over head
Reduce: Jai learned to turn off the water while brushing her teeth, that some people even turn off the shower as they lather up and wash their hair and then turn the water on again to rinse off. Some people even flush the toilet ONLY after going number 2....that was a bit much for us.
Reuse: Jai made a Hummingbird Feeder to Reuse items at our home. She used a plastic pop bottle and small a plastic butter container.
Recycle: We don't usually turn our pop bottles in for recycling, but Jaibrian now has a bag hanging on the back of our kitchen door, set up just for that purpose
REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE
TASK #3: Here is the poster Jai made to display at her school.
TASK #4: Jai learned the principles of "Leave No Trace" by watching a video.
How can we do "Leave No Trace" when we hike/camp?
"Pick up garbage and take it home to throw it away the right way."
Optional Task #5: We don't usually turn our pop bottles in for recycling, but Jaibrian now has a bag hanging on the back of our kitchen door, set up just for that purpose.
